Poetry - Best Work

Poetry is an important part of the English curriculum

Here is an example of J. McGrath's poetry

Bubblegum

At the beginning I was a blue cuboid

Hard and firm, until you put me into your jagged sea cave

And the stalactities and stalagmites crushed me

Then the tepid water softened me

Then you slowly began to bend me to your will

I began to grow as I allowed you to guide me

Until I became as great as I could be

Then I began to strain and weaken until...

BANG!

I popped, burst and died only to

Return to the jagged sea cave once again

And get resurrected to start my life again

HAIKU

A haiku is a type of poem which originally came from Japan.  A traditional haiku  has three lines with

  • five syllables (beats) in the first line
  • seven syllables in the second line
  • five syllables in the third line = seventeen syllables

Because there are only three short lines in a haiku, every word must be very carefuly chosen.  A haiku does not usually rhyme and it does not need to be read aloud - it is a poem tomake you think.
